Nicholas Niles Jr., Westport

Nicholas Niles Jr of Naples, Fla., and Westport died after a lengthy illness in Naples on Friday, Nov. 30, 2012.  Mr. Niles was born on November 9, 1934, the eldest of four children of Nicholas Niles and Marian Lawrence Freeman Niles of Morristown, N.J. He was educated at the Peck School, Groton School and Princeton University, Class of 1956.  He served three years with the US Army Security Agency in Frankfurt am Main.  In 1972 he earned his MBA in marketing at the University of Bridgeport (CT). Mr. Niles had spent 12 years with the Remington Arms Co., Inc. and was an officer for 25 years with several NYSE brokerage firms, retiring in 1999 from A.G. Edwards & Sons, Inc in Fairfield County, Conn., where he resided for 35 years.   He used to belong to the Fairfield County Hunt Club and was joint master of the Fairfield County Beagles for many years.  He spent summers in Westport where he belonged to the Acoaxet Club, Elephant Rock Beach Club, Spindle Rock Club and Newport Reading Room.  Descended on his mother's side from William White, a 1620 Mayflower passenger, and on his father's side from Robert "King" Carter of Virginia, he was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants (NY), of the Society of the Cincinnati (MA) and of the (CT) Society of Colonial Wars of which he was governor 1974-1976.   Nick and Varick moved to Naples, Fla., in 2000.  He served on the boards of the Naples Depot, Southwest Heritage Foundation, and Friends of the Collier County Museums of Naples. In 2012 the Niles’ Guide to “Affordable” Double Barrel Shotguns in America 1875-1945, his life’s work, was published. Mr. Niles leaves his wife of  49 years, Varick Katzenbach Niles, their two sons, Nicholas Niles, III and Samuel Varick Niles, their wives, four granddaughters and a grandson. His wife's halfbrother, Christian Dixon Katzenbach, who lived in the Niles household for many years, and his son survive him as do Mr. Niles' sister, Nancy Niles Faesy, and his brothers, John Adams Niles and William Freeman Niles and their many children.    Services will be held at a later date.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
