Newport Reggae Festival this Saturday


The 5th Annual Newport Waterfront Reggae Festival, taking place this Saturday from noon to 10 p.m., promises a full day and night of positive island vibrations led by reggae legend Freddie McGregor (pictured) along with John Brown’s Body, Mighty Mystic, Etana, New Kingston and Soul Rebel Project. Flexible general admission tickets allow concert attendees to come and go throughout the 10-hour reggae party. In addition to the musicians, the festival features the Reggae Pit with authentic Jamaican food, drink, and a marketplace of vendors.

WHERE: Newport Yachting Center, America's Cup Blvd., Newport

WHEN: Saturday, August 9; noon to 10 p.m.

COST: $45 through August 8; $50 the day of the festival

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
