Nayatt Road repaving project nears

Project also calls for extension of sidewalks to Broadview Drive

The Nayatt Road repaving project is scheduled to start in August.

According to an official at the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, repaving work will begin on the 1.8-mile road in August and continue through until next summer.

DOT Spokesman Charles St. Martin said bids for the project were opened on Friday, June 15, and will be reviewed over the next few weeks before a contractor is selected.

People who live in the Nayatt Road area or who drive the stretch regularly have been anxiously awaiting the repaving project, as the current surface is badly pocked in some sections.

Mr. St. Martin said certain sections of Nayatt Road are so bad that plans call for complete pavement reclamation. He said repaving work usually requires the replacement of the top 1 to 2 inches of pavement, but from Collins Court to Washington Road, work crews will dig out the top 10 to 12 inches and rebuild the roadway foundation as well.

"It's more of a road reconstruction," said Mr. St. Martin.

The complete project runs the length of Nayatt Road from the intersection with Rumstick Road at the eastern end to Washington Road at the west end. In addition to the new asphalt roadway surface, crews will also replace drainage systems and replace the sidewalk which runs from Rumstick to Collins Court.

Mr. St. Martin said the plans also call for the extension of the sidewalk west from Collins Court to Broadview Drive. The DOT spokesman added that the sidewalks will feature granite curbing.

Officials from the state department of transportation are working with the local school department, which is planning to repave the Nayatt School parking lot in the near future.

"We'll let the school department go first" with its project, said Mr. St. Martin.

He said the DOT is also communicating with officials from the CVS Health Charity Classic golf tournament, in an effort to minimize the construction project's impact on next year's tournament.

The Nayatt Road repaving project is expected to cost $3.9 million and will paid for, in part, by federal highway funds.
