Annual fund-raiser road race steps off on Saturday, April 1

It is that time of the year to dust off your running sneakers after a long winter and get ready for the Nayatt 5K.

The 11th annual race is set for Saturday, April 1.

This year's event has festively been titled "This Race Is No Joke!" for April Fool’s Day and organizers expect to see both local and traveling runners and walkers alike. The event will go off rain or shine.

There is a 1-mile race, a kids 50-yard dash, and the 5K, which will begin at 10 a.m.

Meteorologist Mark Searles from Channel 10 will act as master of ceremonies.

The race is organized by the Nayatt School PTO. All proceeds from the event will help fund programs for Nayatt students, including classroom equipment purchases, playground upgrades, physical education programs, music and language classes, library book purchases, and much more.

The annual 5K winds through the neighborhoods surrounding Nayatt School and along the banks of the Barrington River. The race is USATF sanctioned and the course is certified by Ray Nelson. The family walk/runs will take place before the 5K on the school grounds.

The event is slated to be a fun day focused on family and health, and runners of all levels, as well as walkers, are encouraged to participate.

More than 1,200 participants and spectators are expected to take part in a full day of activities including a sponsor’s showcase and raffles.

Event chairwoman Claudia Maiorana said plans for the day are shaping up nicely and many sponsors have returned again this year.

“We are happy to welcome back Jaffe Orthodontics as our title sponsor. As a new feature, this year's raffle baskets are put together by each class at Nayatt. Themes include ‘Around Town and Little Artist’," Ms. Maiorana said.

Online registration can be done through the site www.Nayatt5k.me or in person being early Saturday morning, April 1.
