Mt. Hope student musicians among top in state

Several Mt. Hope student musicians were honored to perform at the Rhode Island Music Educators All-State Music Festival, recently at Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium. After many months of practice and preparation, instrumentalists and vocalists auditioned in front of a panel of judges as part of the three day event.

The auditions took place at Moses Brown School on Providence’s East Side. There, student musicians from across the state performed pieces that they had only hours to rehearse before they would be ranked by the judges.

“This is a year where we had quite a few Mt. Hope students selected,” said choral director, Vicki Boyle.

Those who were named as All State performers are: Brendan Barboza, Alex Brassard, Michael Contente, James Costa, Kelsey Ferrara, Joshua Lee, Isis Loyola, Rachel Majors, A.J. Murgo, Dylan Murphy, Rose Pansa, Nicole Rodrigues, Ricky Sousa and Maxwell Warden.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
