Motorcycle driver airlifted to hospital after crash

A motorcycle driver was airlifted from Westport to Rhode Island Hospital Tuesday evening after he crashed near the corner of Main Road and Taber Lane in the south end of Westport.

Westport police and firefighters responded to a report of motor vehicle crash involving a motorcycle and car at around 6:50 p.m.

Police discovered that the motorcycle was traveling west on Taber Lane approaching Main Road when the 18-year-old operator lost control and was thrown off the motorcycle.  The motorcycle and driver slid along the pavement from Taber Lane onto Main Road.

As the driver slid onto Main Road, he collided with a Volvo being driven north on Main Road.  The motorcycle driver, who was wearing a helmet, suffered a head injury from the impact.

Westport firefighters transported the motorcycle operator to Westport High School where he was transported by MedFlight to Rhode Island Hospital.

The crash remains under investigation by Officer David Leite.  The operator of the Volvo was not injured.
