Mother-daughters trio open Double Bar Music

WESTPORT — Friends Music has closed, but a new family-owned music shop has moved in quickly to take its place at 1093 State Road in Westport. The new venture, Double Bar Music, is owned and operated by jazz singer and Berklee College of Music professor Marcelle Gauvin and her two daughters Kelsey and Kimber-lee Jacobsen. Lessons began this Monday, Sept. 10, while renovations will be taking place over the next couple  of months in preparation for the official opening.
Marcelle Gauvin is an internationally recognized jazz singer who is a voice professor at Berklee College of Music and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
Daughter Kelsey Jacobsen has been teaching voice for eight years in the Bristol County area.
And daughter Kimber-lee Jacobsen was a member of the teen pop group Varsity Girls and has performed with a number of well known artists — even at the Boston Pops.
The family, who are long-time residents of Westport, are hoping to make it "more than just your average music shop," Kelsey Jacobsen said.
Double Bar Music will offer private music lessons in voice, guitar, drum-set, piano, bass, strings, woodwinds, and brass. There will also be ensembles, group lessons, music theory, and online classes.
"For students who choose to be apart of our ensemble program, we're going to have some awesome performance opportunities around the corner that we hope will be very inspiring for both students and audience," Kelsey. Jacobsen said. "Many of our teachers have been teaching in this area for quite some time and have built up a great reputation. We are more than excited to have them on board.
"Our goal is to make it a true school of music where young musicians can come to practice their art, and established artists can broaden their musical knowledge. We also want to create a community of musicians where people can learn from each other and make connections, both musically and personally, that may last a lifetime.

He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
