Michael J. Proto, 73, of Tiverton, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2014, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Vivian L. (Araujo) Proto. Born in Bristol, he was a son of the late Michael and Jennie Proto.

Mr. Proto was a supervisor for the Rhode Island Veterans Home.  A Bronze Star recipient, he proudly served 23 years in the United States Army in Korea, Desert Shield and Desert Storm, retiring as a lieutenant colonel.  He was a member of the Tiverton Rod and Gun Club.

He was the loving father of Paula P. Alves and her husband Herman of Bristol, and Harold L. Gaines and his wife Debra, Ronald R. Gaines and Donald J. Gaines, all of Anderson, SC. He was the cherished grandfather of seven and great grandfather of ten. He was the brother of the late Peter “Sonny” Proto.

Relatives and friends are invited to visitation on Tuesday, April 29, from 5-7 p.m. in Pocasset Memorial Funeral Home, 462 Main Road, Tiverton. Burial will be private. www.almeida-pocasset.com

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
