Men's clothing consignment store opens in Bristol

A new consignment clothing shop in Bristol aims to reach an otherwise neglected market: Men.

"It's definitely true," said Bonnie Poisson, who just opened up her Keeper's men's clothing resale shop at 580 Wood St. "So many guys I know love getting bargains but there wasn't (a consignment store) that was focused only on men."

Keepers specializes in quality used men's clothing, from slacks and jeans to shirts, sweaters jackets and graphic, concert, band and college T-shirts. The store has been open a few weeks and Ms. Poisson is still filling out the location with consigned items. Word has spread pretty quickly and business has been good, she said.

She's also looking for consigned items, and her deal is simple: She and the consignor split the sale price 50/50.

"It's a great way to earn a little extra money through consignment," she said.

This isn't the first retail shop for Ms. Poisson, who is married to husband Ron, has three children and lives in Bristol. In the mid-1990s she was co-owner of Salty Paws, a Newport shop for dog and cat lovers. More recently, she worked the counter at the Herreshoff Marine Museum and America’s Cup Hall of Fame. Keepers definitely fills a niche, she said.

"I had had the idea of a resale store in my mind for a long time," she said. "I thought it would be a cool thing, and it's an up and coming trend now, especially with the economy."

Ms. Poisson hasn't had a full-fledged grand opening yet, though she plans one for the early part of the year. Until then, the store is open daily at 11 a.m., and there's a website, www.keepersri.com. You can also find the store on Facebook.
