Memorial plaques unveiled as OLMC prepares for feast

Oldest continuous religious feast in the state begins July 13

Great Italian food and entertainment will be featured on the Bristol Town Common this week as the oldest, continuous religious feast in the diocese begins Thursday, July 13.

The 119th edition of the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church Feast continues through July 16. Already, parishioners have something to celebrate: two perpetual memorial plaques commemorating the names of all former OLMC Chief Marshals (since 1899) and the Thomas Vendituoli “Faith in Action” Award winners (since 2006). The plaques are located near the door at the entrance of the church.

“The Aurora Civic Association in Providence was the location and the commencement recently of a new tradition at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, with the establishment of the first annual OLMC Church Feast Chief Marshals and the Thomas Vendituoli ‘Faith in Action,’ Award Recipient’s Reception,” said Patrick “Pat” McCarthy, plaque committee chairman. “The event was attended by more than 40 former chief marshals and Faith in Action Award winners, Vendituoli family members, and many other family members and friends.”

This year’s OLMC Church Feast coincides with the founding of the parish, 100 years ago, in 1917, by Italian immigrants in Bristol.

“With that, OLMC Church trustees Ms. Elizabeth Vendituoli and Mr. Frank Vaccaro, honored OLMC’s Pastor, the Rev. Henry P. Zinno Jr., by naming him as this year’s Feast Celebration Chief Marshal,” Mr. McCarthy said. Additionally, Joshua Cordeiro was also named this year’s “Faith in Action” Award winner.

At the reception, the two Perpetual Memorial Plaques were unveiled.

“The family names populating the former chief marshals plaque reads as a ‘Who’s Who’ of Bristol’s history,” Mr. McCarthy said. “Campagna, Cavallaro, DeFelice, Murgo, Malafronte, Marino, Parolisi, Salcone, Salzano, Troiano and Velleca, are just a small sampling of the many families with lengthy ties to OLMC and Bristol.”

The evening concluded with some thoughts and a prayer by Rev. Matthew Glover, who was the 2007 “Faith in Action” Award recipient.

“As we celebrate 100 years of faith, it is most wonderful to have these plaques since it is a good way for parishioners to acknowledge all the good work these people have done for the parish, and to inspire all of us to do the work of God and help the community of faith that Our Lady of Mount Carmel is to continue to thrive and flourish for the next 100 years,” Father Zinno said.
