Meet Tery Pedro-Matrone: Broker, Mom, former business owner


BUSINESS OWNER: “I grew up in Mystic, Conn., graduated from Fitch Senior High School and went to the New London Hairdressing Academy. Then I owned and operated a salon in Waterford, Conn., for 12 years.”

MEETING HER HUSBAND: “I met my husband, Rob Matrone, in Waterford. We went to this 1950s club that neither of us had ever been to, each of us with friends who wanted to go but didn’t want to go alone. So we got to know each other a bit while our friends danced. We dated for about six months — this was around 1989-1990. Then we broke up and Rob ended up in the Persian Gulf, working for a defense contractor.”

REUNITED: “He returned from the Gulf in 1991 but didn’t go back to his place in Connecticut at first. He was spending time with his family in Bristol. When I saw him again, it was because he had a date.  He wanted to look good and he knew where to go to get the best cut! I was okay with it, but I charged him. And he knew to give me a nice tip, too. But I guess that date didn’t go so well, because we ran into each other and started dating again not long after, on my 30th birthday.”

WORKING IN BRISTOL: “We married in May of 1994. Rob was still traveling with work and would be gone for four or five months at a time. I stayed in Connecticut and ran my business. I sold my house in Waterford and we lived in his home, in New London’s historic district. Eventually, he left the defense industry and started working as an engineer with Tri-Mack, on Tupelo Street in Bristol, and commuted from New London for a little over a year. We moved here in 1997. I commuted for a bit, then closed my salon.”

STARTING A FAMILY IN BRISTOL: “When we first moved here, I spent a lot of time looking for a place to live. I walked into the former Harper, Ramos & Sheridan office on Hope Street and got a map of Bristol that I still have today. I looked all over town — mostly looking for land. Back then there were pages and pages of land listings. Today you’ll be lucky to see 10. I finally found the piece of property we eventually built on, and we closed on tax day, 1998. In the meantime, we lived on Church Street. Our son Landon was born in 1998, and we built our house from 2000 to 2001. When Landon was almost four, I got my sales license and then my broker’s license not long after that.”

SUCCESS IN REAL ESTATE: “I thought real estate was going to be full time, but I had a sense it would be more flexible than it really is. The fact is, your clients need you when they need you. Rob and I routinely found ourselves meeting to hand Landon off, and fortunately Rob could take him to his office. I am so thankful for the support of my husband. As busy as Rob is, he has always supported me, which has allowed me to establish a client base and achieve so much in this business. I was voted Five Star Professional Real Estate Agent, Rhode Island, for 2011, earned the Circle of Excellence Sales Award from 2004 through 2006, was named the Top Sales Agent at Harper, Ramos & Sheridan in 2006, as well as a Multi Million Dollar Producer. I couldn’t have accomplished any of these without Rob’s support.”

FAMILY DINNERS, FAMILY FUN: “Family has always been very important to us. We have spent a lot of time on the sidelines, enjoying watching Landon play soccer. We volunteer quite a bit, most recently with the St. Philhomena School and the Victoria Sousa Foundation. We like to golf as a family, and we make a point to eat together every night, as well as keep routines like homemade pizza and movie night most Sundays. We’ve always taken Landon along with us, and the positive result is we have always had a kid we could take pretty much anywhere. We could count on him to behave well in the company of adults.”

CLIENTS FOR LIFE: “I find that in real estate, whether you are working with buyers or sellers, they become your friends. I have long-lasting relationships with people I worked with years ago. I put a lot of energy into my relationships with people. This is how running a salon and real estate are similar — and why I love both. It’s a comfortable, friendly relationship. People used to come in to my salon just to chat. My clients become my friends — that’s how I work in real estate. That, and appreciating the importance of attention to detail. You have to make sure you provide full service, all the time. You have to be available, and you can’t do anything halfway.”

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
