Meet Laurie Fletcher: Former flight attendant, daughter of hockey Hall of Famer

HOMETOWN: “Westwood, Massachusetts. My father, Ferny Flaman, was a professional hockey player, and the captain of the Bruins for many years. Following his time as a player, he worked as a coach and manager for teams from the Rhode Island Reds to the Los Angeles Blades, but we always maintained the home in Westwood.”

PREVIOUS CAREER: “I graduated from high school in Westwood, and went on to Lasell College in Newton. After graduation, I began working as a flight attendant with Delta Airlines. I flew with Delta for 33 years, both domestically and internationally. I’ve traveled to Africa, China, and all over Europe, and lived in New York, Boston, Houston, and Fort Lauderdale. Working in an industry that gave me the opportunity to explore the world was a wonderful privilege.”

WHY REAL ESTATE: “When I met my husband and moved to Barrington in the mid-1990s, I didn’t know anyone, and I didn’t know my way around. Real estate was a great fit for me — I like working with people, and I have always worked in sales. Even when I was flying, I kept up a sales business of one kind or another, on the side. With real estate, I was able to meet new people, orient myself, and learn a new career at the same time. What’s interesting is how much real estate draws on the same skills I needed as a flight attendant — the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and efficiently is absolutely essential to both.”

FREE TIME: “That’s not something I have a lot of right now, between work and family commitments. I can’t say that I have any travel plans — I did enough of that back in the day. Not to say that I don’t intend to ever go anywhere, but it’s not a priority right now. I’m happy to stick close to home, walk my dogs, and watch the occasional hockey game.”

THE BEST PART OF MY JOB: “I really enjoy helping people, and families, find their dream home. Whether they are relocating across the street or across the country, it is so gratifying to be a part of such an important transition in your clients’ lives, and that satisfaction is main reason I love what I do. For a few years, while I was getting started in this industry, I maintained a part-time schedule with Delta. But I’ve been doing real estate for 15 years now, and I haven’t looked back."

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
