Mary Olinda (Sousa) Martins, 96, of Bristol


Mary Olinda (Sousa) Martins, 96 of Franklin Street passed away January 6th. She was the wife of Antonio A. Martins to whom she had been married for 52 years.   Born in Bristol, she was the daughter of the late William and Maria Olinda (Costa) Sousa.

Mary attended Bristol schools and worked at Kaiser Aluminum for 33 years before retiring. She was a member of the Warren Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her brothers, William Sousa of Bristol and Leonel Sousa and Raymond Sousa; and her sister Lena Webster all of Deltona, Flor.

Her funeral services were held January 10th at the George Lima Funeral Home with reading presented by Carl Palanzi, an Elder of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Burial followed in North Burial Ground.  Serving as pallbearers were Victor Antunes, Mark Sousa, Justin Maze, Joseph de Lemos, Ken Rostron and Carl Palanzi. A Memorial Service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of  Jehovah’s Witnesses, 9 Wilbur Ave. Warren, RI on Saturday, January 19th at 1 p.m.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
