Mary I. (Miranda) Cowen, 75, of Westport, passed away unexpectedly at home on Sunday, June 16, 2013. She was the wife of the late George W. Cowen, Jr.

Born in Fall River, daughter of the late Gil and Isabel (Torres) Miranda, she was a lifelong resident of Westport.

Prior to her retirement, she worked as a medical secretary for the former Truesdale Hospital in Fall River.

Mrs. Cowen was a communicant of St. George Church, Westport and loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her four sons, George W. Cowen III of Carver, Mass., Alan G. Cowen of Florida, Steven C. Cowen and Richard J. Cowen, both of Westport; 11 grandchildren, five great grandchildren,and several nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of the late Cheryl Cowen.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 417005, Boston, MA 02241-7005.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Potter Funeral Home, Westport.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
