Mary Gomes Kivlehan, 84,of Falls Church, Va., and formerly of Middletown — It is with a heavy heart that we announce the death of our beloved mother.

Mary peacefully passed away on January 2, 2013, in her home at Chesterbrook Residences in Falls Church, Va. She was predeceased by her husband Francis B. Kivlehan. She is survived by her daughters Barbara Kivlehan Glover and her husband Graham of Oakton, Va., and Anne Marie Kivlehan Hill and her husband Michael of Coronado, Calif.; her sisters, Catherine Snell of Little Compton, and Dorothy Wilkie of Tiverton; granddaughters Jenell Glover and Valeria Hill; and loving nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late John Gomes.

Mary was born in Little Compton on December 20, 1928. She was a daughter of the late Manuel C. Gomes Jr. and Quiteria Rocha Gomes.  She moved to Middletown to raise her family, and later moved to Fairfax, Va., in her golden years.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mary’s name to Chesterbrook Residences, 2030Westmoreland Street, Falls Church, VA 22043.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
