Mary Elizabeth “Bette” Vermette of Bristol


Mary Elizabeth “Bette” Vermette, a lifelong resident of Bristol, died on March 19th.  She was the daughter of the late Norman J. and Josephine (Cleary) Vermette.  She was the sister of Jean Vermette.

Bette graduated from the University of RI in 1950 and was a teacher for 36 years in the Providence and Bristol School departments.  She also worked as a tour guide for 16 years at Blithewold Mansion, Gardens and Arboretum.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Rev. Barry Gamache at St. Mary’s Church March 21st. Liturgical readings were by Ory Lima and Manny Perry.  The Prayer of the Faithful was read by David Barboza.  The offertory gifts were presented by Nancy Du Pont and Lolie Mc Soley. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were Paul Wilson, Eric Wilson, Matt Wilson, Melissa Wilson, John Paul Perry and Charles Burke.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
