Mary C. Haggerty, 89, Westport


Mary C. (Leary) Haggerty, 89, of Westport, passed away on Wednesday, Aug.13, 2014, at her home in Westport. She was the wife of John T. Haggerty Sr. to whom she was married for 68 years.

Mary was born in Fall River the daughter of the late James and Bertha (Forgette) Leary. For many years, Mrs. Haggerty worked as a nurse’s aide at Saint Anne’s Hospital. She provided compassionate care to numerous patients and formed ongoing friendships with co-workers. Later in her career, Mary worked as a saleslady at the former Anderson Little. She retired after 20 years of service.

Mary was a life-long learner. She fulfilled a long-time dream in 1996 when she received her Graduate Equivalency Diploma at the age of 77. She was a long-time communicant at Our Lady of Grace Church in Westport. Mary enjoyed spending time with her husband.

As a former member of the WMCA, Mary was an avid participant in health and fitness activities well into her seventies. She also participated in studies for the advancement of women’s health. Mary especially enjoyed day trips to Horseneck Beach.

Survivors besides her devoted husband are three daughters, Joan Vasiliauskas (late George)  of Springville, NY; Sharon Gilbert and her husband Stephen of Tiverton, RI; Beverly Roberts of Westport; a son, John “Jack” Haggerty Jr. of Fall River; five grandchildren, Mark Vasiliauskas and his wife Susan of Ohio, Wendy McGuiness and her husband Bradley of Michigan, Michael Roberts and his wife Andrea of Little Compton, Kelley Roberts and her fiancée Michael Almeida of Fall River, and Preston Gilbert of Maine; eight great grandchildren, Kyle, Megan, Justin, Katie, Ryan, Matthew, Timothy and Talia. She was the sister of the late Louise Breton.

Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 16, at 9 a.m. from the Hathaway Home for Funerals 1813 Robeson St., Fall River, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Grace Church, 569 Sanford Road, Westport. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial to follow in Saint Patrick Cemetery in Fall River. To light a candle, sign guest book, facility directions, go to or call 508 673-0781.
