Mary A. Blake, 84, Middletown

Mary A. Blake, 84, of Middletown, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013, at the Grand Islander Nursing Home where she had been a resident for nearly three years.

Mary was born on April 15, 1929, in Fall River.  She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Agnes (Horan) Bento, of Tiverton.  She was predeceased by her husband William J. Blake and her son, Thomas.  She was also predeceased by three brothers, John J. Bento of Portsmouth, Joseph F. Bento Jr. of Tiverton, and William L. Bento of Florida.

She is survived by two brothers, Robert Bento of Jaffrey, N.H. and Paul Bento and his wife Susan of Auburn, Mass.  She leaves two nieces and eight nephews.

Mary worked many years as an administrative assistant for the U.S. Navy.  She enjoyed traveling and was a happy fun-loving person who will be missed by many people.

Her funeral will be held Tuesday, Oct. 22, from the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport, with viewing from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. followed by graveside services at Newport Memorial Park, Middletown.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
