Manuel Luis Vieira, Jr., 91, of Silver Creek Manor passed away on April 26. He was the husband of Lillian (Dias) Vieira.

Born in Bristol, he was the son of the late Manuel Luis and Annie (Pacheco) Vieira. In addition to his wife Lillian, he is survived by his children, Lillian Simonini and her husband John of Michigan, and James Vieira and his wife Diane of Bristol; and his grandchildren, Alexander Simonini, Carrieanne Simonini DeLoach, Nathan Simonini and Katherine Schaus. He was the brother of Mary Luciano and the late Annie Fortin, Philomena Torres and Alice Correia.

Mr. Vieira attended Bristol Schools. He served with honor as a Tech 5 in the Pacific Theater. He owned Metacom Garage and was a foreman at Kaiser Aluminum. Mr. Vieira dedicated his life to public service; serving 3 years on the Town Council and has been a volunteer fireman for more than 60 years. He was also a past Commander of the VFW Anthony C. Almeida Post #237.

His funeral services were held April 29, from the George Lima Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Rev. Richard Narciso at St. Elizabeth’s Church. The offertory gifts were presented by Barry Carinha, Wayne Zina and Etelvina Vieira. Burial with military honors followed in North Burial Ground. Serving as pallbearers were Alex Simonini, Nathan Simonini, Ben Schaus, Greg Toeves, Barry Carinha and James Annis.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
