Magic Johnson, others descend on Portsmouth Monday


PORTSMOUTH — Earvin “Magic” Johnson will return to co-host the third annual Jeffrey Osborne Celebrity Classic taking place Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 11-12, at The Carnegie Abbey Club. He’ll be joined by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and Rhode Island native Jeffrey Osborne.

The star-studded, two-day golf event benefits charities that support initiatives to bring music and arts back to public school systems and those that provide safe, enriching environments and services for families and children in need. To date, more than $300,000 has been distributed to Rhode Island nonprofits. Celebrities attending include professional athletes, entertainers and music industry legends. In addition to Mr. Johnson and Mr. Osborne, those confirmed to date include:

• Sugar Ray Leonard, legendary boxer

• Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, six-time NBA MVP, 19-time NBA All-Star

• Julius Erving (“Dr. J”), NBA legend

• Reggie Jackson, “Mr. October,” legendary MLB player

• The O’Jays, RandB trio

• Johnny Gill of New Edition

• Sinbad, actor and comedian

• Ernie DiGregorio, former NBA player for Buffalo Braves, LA Lakers
