Lone shipwreck survivor to tell his story

Posted

Nine years before the wreck of the storied SS Edmund Fitzgerald, there was the SS Daniel J Morrell. Unlike the Edmund Fitzgerald, when the Daniel J Morrell broke in half in Lake Huron in 30-foot seas and 65 mph winds, there was one survivor: Dennis Hale.

Hale has recently written a book: "Shipwrecked: Reflections of the Sole Survivor," recounting his experience.

Hale is coming to Rhode Island this weekend and will be the keynote speaker at the annual banquet and awards dinner of the Steamship Historical Society of America, of which he is a longtime member.

The event will be held at the Atlantic Beach Club, Middletown, on Saturday, May 17; 6 to 10 p.m. It is open to the public, and the $75 ticket includes dinner hour and a cocktail hour opportunity to meet the author. For tickets, call 401/463-3570.
