Local doctor, Barrington resident, shares beauty secrets
Looking for the secrets to lifelong beauty? Dr. Luciano Sztulman has you covered.
The Barrington resident and chief of gynecology services at Roger Williams Medical Center recently published his first book, “Beauty is Power: Dr. Luciano’s Brazilian Beauty Secrets for Staying Young.”
The book is inspired by Dr. Sztulman’s homeland, Sao Paulo, Brazil. It’s a country rich in culture with a population that Dr. Sztulman said carries a unique sense of beauty focused on a lot more than physical good looks.
Dr. Sztulman said Brazilians see beauty as three concepts combined as a type of triangle with beauty of health on either side anchored by youthfulness on the bottom.
“Growing up in Brazil, I couldn’t help but adopt its broad concept of beauty. All Brazilians learn from an early age the value and importance of family and friends. All around them they see beautiful people of both sexes, of all ages and weights and body types, rich and poor, who take pride in themselves and show exactly that in the way they take care of themselves, dress, work, play, eat, and even sleep,” Dr. Sztulman said.
“The real point of my book is that these Brazilian ‘secrets’ are not secrets at all; they’re well within the reach of everyone, not just those stereotypical gorgeous young women and handsome, muscular men who populate the country’s beaches.”
Dr. Sztulman has previously written for medical journals and community newspapers on health topics though the new book is his first attempt at writing about medicine for a “lay audience.”
Dr. Sztulman said he wrote the book to capture not only the Brazilian attitude toward beauty but how that feeling affects the society’s broad concepts such as culture, religion, work and the economy along with individual issues such as nutrition, health and fitness.
Dr. Sztulman is married with two children. He said he stays “very active” and relishes all the time he can spend outdoors. He said one goal of the book is to highlight a culture celebrating life, passion, freedom and individualism while letting readers know beauty isn’t just about a set of six-pack abs.
“Everyone can adapt Brazilian attitudes toward youthfulness, health, and beauty that will definitely affect their whole lives and increase their happiness, their sense of self-value, and their confidence,” he said.
“These new attitudes and behaviors become apparent not only in their physical appearances but also in their inner selves, which in turn reinforces these attitudes and behaviors. It’s a classic positive feedback loop, and that’s the key to continually improving inner as well as outer beauty.”
The book is available on Amazon.com and for digital download. Copies can also be picked up at Dr. Luciano’s office in Providence, 1 Randall Square, Suite 401, Providence, where he is available for signings.
