Antique fire engine club holding annual show at Burr's Hill

Fire buffs are in for a treat when dozens of antique trucks converge on Warren this Sunday, Sept. 17.

The Rhode Island Antique Fire Apparatus Society will hold its annual show at Burr’s Hill Park, with an estimated 50 trucks, most of them privately owned, coming along for the ride.

The society’s visit to Warren was led in part by member George Gempp, who runs the fire museum on Baker Street and said he has the service “in his blood.”

“I always liked fire trucks,” he said. “No matter where I go, I always have to sniff out fire stations.”

It’s no wonder: He is among four generations of fire fighters in his family, with his son, father and grandfather all serving in their day.

Though many of the trucks are privately owned, Mr. Gempp said there will probably be some representations from the Warren Fire Department. He’s also reached out to Bristol, which has a classic 1930s Ahrens-Fox machine. Warren’s “Green Machine,” the retired Engine 1 that was the first green fire truck in the state, will also be there. It’s now privately owned.

The show runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and it’s free. The Providence Fire Department’s canteen truck will have food and drinks, and there will be a chainsaw artist as well. Parking is available along Main, and in the Franklin Street Park&Ride.
