Letter: Manuel Sousa did original restoration work on cannon

Posted

To the editor:

Because of the recent letter to the editor and photograph about the cannon (named Old Flora) and carrier caisson repair at Legion Park, the Portsmouth Garden Club has received information that the actual work was done by Manuel P. Sousa of Portsmouth.

The British cannon left here from 1788 was moved to the park in 1983. Mr. Sousa did the work as a totally voluntary effort, without charge to anyone. He has cared for the cannon in the past and had kept his work in the background then, as he did now.

We are grateful to the Public Works Department for moving it offsite for the repairs. But most of all we are appreciative of the time and expense spent by this previously unsung individual who beautified the memorial and honored the veterans who are recognized in Legion Park.
