Letter: Judge Tiverton Budget Committee members as individuals

Posted

To the editor:

I am a newly elected member of the Tiverton Budget Committee. Quite a few of the recent

letters to the editor have expressed opinions of how the "majority" of the committee has

sided on various issues. Different committee members have expressed their views on

numerous issues and there has been much discussion. One member has received a lot of

press attention for his personal views.

At the last committee meeting a simple majority of six members carried a motion to end

the public forum at the  beginning of the meetings. Five members voted to continue the

public forum. While the majority did vote to end the public forum there was still strong opposition to this motion and several of us spoke against it. I would ask the public to consider this when they suggest that we all agreed.

Additionally, please either attend meetings or view the video which is produced for every

meeting. Observe who is speaking, what they said, how they voted and how they interacted

with the rest of the committee members. This is the only accurate way for you to measure how each committee member matches up with budget issues which are important to you. If you find any committee members to be lacking of your trust and support, don't re-elect them.

Also remember that everyone on the committee was elected which means that their views,

regardless of how distorted and unrealistic they may appear to you, have resonated with some portion of the electorate.

In case you're wondering, I voted to keep the public forum and will do my best to have it

reinstated next year.

Thank you,

Jay Edwards
