To the editor:
In arriving at a solution to responsible and proper tax exemption for those over 65; I hope the town council and tax administrator will take into consideration the crucial role that those citizens play.
The younger generations do much of the important legwork, but the seniors are the bedrock of our community and the glue that holds it together. We only need to look to the major contributions of many who share their largesse with our town as a whole. Some outstanding individual examples are Sandy and Dottie McCulloch, Dr. Victor Lerish, Bonnie Warren and Pete McCalmont, or the hundreds of “over-65” volunteers for Tap-In, our churches, garden clubs, the land trust, the preservation society and many others.
It is fortunate for the whole town that so many generous, experienced and ambitious people stay in town and pay taxes — mostly for the schools. In thanks and admiration for them all, it is to our best interest to retain the tax deduction for them all, regardless of what their incomes are.
