Letter: We are fiscal conservatives and we support new Westport school

To the editor:

We are writing in support of the new middle-high school proposal in Westport and want to urge our friends and neighbors to vote yes on February 27.

We know thaat we are not alone in wanting the best possible education for our children. But we are very conservative, financially.  Having both served on Westport’s finance committee, we are especially conscious of our financial standing as a community.

Ten years ago when the town built our fire station without including a police station, being penny wise and pound foolish did not pay. We should take the opportunity to learn from our previous mistakes and make sure this project makes as much financial sense as possible. The solution is a state-of-the-art educational facility.

We are extremely persuaded by the fact that Westport has the lowest cost per student of any of the projects approved by the Massachusetts School Building Authority this year. We will conclude that we are getting a twenty-first century school and community building, at a price lower than others, and the state is picking up nearly half the tab. As fellow taxpayers, we can vote for this!
