Leopold beats Fiorenzano to win 109th Amateur title

PORTSMOUTH — Two golfers with local ties vied for the 109th State Amateur Championship Friday, July 11, at Montaup Country Club, Wannamoisett's Bobby Leopold edging Metacomet's Andrew Fiorenzano, 4-and-2, in the 36-hole finale.

For Leopold, the title was his second. He won the 2009 crown with a 3-and-2 win over Bill Forcier at nearby Crestwood. Friday, Leopold never trailed after he made par and Fioranzano made bogey on the par 4, 399 yard 17th hole. He then went up two for the last time with a birdie at the par 5 fifth before going four up with back-to-back wins on the par 3 eighth and par four nine during the afternoon 18.

East Providence Post and eastbayri.com photographer Richard W. Dionne Jr. chronicled the event in pictures.
