Leonard P. Mercier, 54, Little Compton

Leonard Paul Mercier, 54, of Long Highway, Little Compton, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012.  He was the husband of Nancy Claire (Medeiros) Mercier.  Born on Sept. 21, 1958, in Fall River, he was the son of the late Lorraine (Smith) and Roger Mercier.
He was employed by Salve Regina University as a supervisor in grounds.  He was a member of First Baptist Old Stone Church and the Sakonnet Sportsmen Club.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mindy Vecchione (husband John) and Kadie Mercier. He also leaves a granddaughter, Isabella Vecchione.  He was the brother of the late Robbie Mercier.  He is survived by his siblings, Donna Hill, Roger Mercier, Roseanne Mercier and William Mercier.  He also leaves his mother-in-law, Yvette Almeida.
Visitation is Tuesdday, 6-8 p.m., and Wednesday from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m.  His funeral will be held Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. from the Pocasset Memorial Funeral Home, 462 Main Road, Tiverton, with a 10 a.m. service at the First Baptist Old Stone Church, 7 Old Stone Church Road, Tiverton. Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery.  www.almeida-pocasset.com for online guestbook.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
