Last-second goal lifts Barrington over Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School girls’ soccer team lost in heartbreaking fashion Friday night, as Barrington’s Elizabeth Grover scored with only five seconds left on the clock for a 2-1 Eagles victory.

The loss dropped the Patriots to 1-5-1 in Division 1, while Barrington improved to 5-3-1.

Grace Gesmondi scored the lone goal for Portsmouth, which came in the second half on an assist by Lily Tomlinson. The Eagles’ Grace Muccino scored the other Barrington goal in the first half. 

Both goalkeepers — the Patriots’ Gabrielle Schenck and the Eagles’ Jenna Park — had nine saves.

The Patriots will play Burrillville on the road Tuesday, Oct. 9, before hosting Prout on Thursday, Oct. 11, and then Cranston West on Saturday, Oct. 13.

After that, the squad hits the road to face Coventry on Tuesday, Oct. 16, then Lincoln on Thursday, Oct. 18.

Barrington hosts Prout on Tuesday, Oct. 9, and then Lincoln on Thursday, Oct. 11. The team hits the road on Saturday, Oct. 13, for a matchup against St. Mary Academy Bay View.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
