We must prioritize the task of improving our schools.
This past year, the General Assembly started the work of fixing our school buildings and put a $250,000,000 bond on the ballot for your approval. That's a great first step and we should stay the course over the next few years to ensure all of our school buildings are safe, warm and dry.
However there is more to be done. We need to look beyond the infrastructure question for other ways to provide our educators with the tools they need to complete their mission.
I propose that we work to reduce average classroom size and bring down our average teacher-to-student ratio. Our teachers have difficulty doing their jobs if they do not have the ability to meaningfully spend time with each and every student on a consistent basis.
We are a government of limited means. However, I believe that education is as important a public mission as public safety. We must prioritize the expenditure of public funds to ensure we have a well-functioning education system.
