KMS roof leak to cost $1M to repair

A leak in the roof over the Kickemuit Middle School auditorium will cost nearly $1 million to fix, but the regional school district will only be on the hook for one-fourth of the price.

The leak cause extensive damage to the auditorium ceiling, requiring it to be replaced. In addition to the new, acoustic ceiling, workers will remove some asbestos, replace old lighting and install new heating and air conditioning vents.

The whole project will be submitted to the Rhode Island Department of Education, which funds 76 percent of capital improvements to municipal school buildings. The project is estimated to cost $980,000, of which the Bristol Warren Regional School District will be responsible for about $250,000.

The full regional school committee still has to approve the project before requests for proposals from construction companies are submitted.
