Kickemuit students honored

Two Kickemuit Middle School students will be honored for overall excellence at an awards banquet in Warwick later this month.

Eighth graders Madison Withers and David Marshall were recently named this year’s winners of the school’s Scholar Leader Award. The award, available to students who attend schools which are members of the New England League of Middle Schools, recognizes overall educational excellence and leadership, Kickemuit Middle School Principal Beth Hayes said Tuesday.

“They’re great students,” she said.

Both will be honored at a statewide dinner at the West Valley Inn in Warwick. There, they will meet Rhode Island Commissioner of Education Deborah Gist and receive their awards.

Ms. Hayes said students are nominated from Kickemuit’s various teams, and administrators take the nominations and rank them.

“We looked at grades, but also their leadership, whether it be athletics or in the classroom. We had several instances of their support of other students,” she said. “Every child that was nominated is special; it was a very tough decision.”

Madison lives in Warren; David, in Bristol.
