Karyn Ann (Medeiros) Stone, 61

Karyn Ann (Medeiros) Stone, 61, of Bristol and Hog Island died October 6, 2012 after a grueling ten year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was the wife of Randy Stone and the sister of Pamela (Medeiros) Skammels of Dartmouth, MA. Born in New Bedford, MA, she was the daughter of Edmund Medeiros and Helene (Niemiec) Medeiros of Westport, MA.

Married 34 years, the Stones lived in Seekonk, MA for 19 years before moving to Bristol in 1998. Karyn is also survived by a son, Nicholas Alexander Stone of Riverside and Hog Island.

A graduate of Barrington High School and University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, she also earned a post-graduate associate degree in Architectural Drawing from RI School of Design. Karyn’s career years were spent in interior design and related fields. She worked for several furniture stores, designing and coordinating showroom floor displays, arrangements, and presentation. Her duties included accessories buying for the stores. She also taught art at Barrington High School.

One of Karyn’s passions in life, besides her husband, son, and cats was skiing at an expert level. She tore up the greats: St. Moritz and Innsbruck, Vail and Whistler, but was also quite content at her “home” mountain, Stratton in Vermont.

Another passion was charity work. Over the years she and Rosa built a tiny flea market into the giant yard sale at the Columban Fathers annual festival. It became the largest fundraiser of the entire event, bigger even than the chicken barbeque.

She will be sadly missed by the many whose lives she touched.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial, Saturday, October 13, 2012 at 11:00 am at St. Mary’s Church, Wood Street, Bristol. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Columban Fathers,60 Ferry Road,Bristol,RI02809.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
