Julie Jones Sturges of Bristol, died on Saturday, Oct. 5 in the Helen Porter Hospital in Middlebury, Vt. She was 81.

Mrs. Sturges was born in Rochester, N.Y., to Dr. and Mrs. Thomas B. Jones, now deceased.

She attended the Columbia Preparatory School in Rochester and graduated from Smith College in 1953. One of the highlights of her years at Smith was attending the Sorbonne in Paris where she happily absorbed the French culture  and never forgot  the language. After graduation, she worked in Washington, D.C., with the intelligence service where she met and married Philemon Sturges, who was stationed in Washington with the U.S. Navy at the time. They traveled to Japan where their oldest daughter, Sarah, a resident of Jackson, Wyoming, was born.

After returning to the U.S. the family settled in Bristol, in a house they built in a Japanese style on the shore of Usher cove overlooking Narragansett Bay. Her love for the land and her house remained in her heart all her life. Two more daughters, Julia Eastburn Sturges (husband Christopher Lacey) of Ripton, Vt. and Elizabeth Sturges Llerena (husband Fari) of Jackson Heights, N.Y., were born there.

Mrs. Sturges was an avid reader who took particular pleasure in reading The New York Times on a daily basis. She was an environmentalist and talented gardener.

In addition to her daughters, Mrs. Sturges is survived by three grandchildren, Yibekal and Yared Lacey and Adrian Tomas Llerena Sturges, and by her brother, Thomas B. Jones, Jr. (wife Hazel) of Hampstead, N.C.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 12 at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Bristol at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the ACLU or to a charity of one's choice.
