Joseph Francisco Ferreira, 75, Bristol


Joseph Francisco Ferreira, 75, of Oliver Street, passed away on Aug. 10 at Silver Creek Manor.

He was the husband of Mary da Conceicao (Cordeiro) Ferreira.

Born in Relva, St. Michael, he was the son of the late Manuel Ferreira Claudio and Escolastica dos Anjos (Soares).

He was employed as a machine operator at Ludlow Cable for 10 years and then Carol Cable for 30 years before retiring.

He is survived by his wife Mary, his sister Maria and her husband Luciano Almeida; nieces Mary Lou Fidalgo and Delores Costa, nephew Jose M. Almeida and great nieces and nephews Mathew Fidalgo, Mark Fidalgo, Michael Fidalgo, Louis Costa and Emily Costa.

His funeral was held Monday from the George Lima Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Rev. Richard Narciso at St. Elizabeth Church.  Liturgical readings were by Louis Costa and Delores Costa and the offertory gifts were presented by Delores Costa, Mary Lou Fidalgo and Joan Almeida. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were Jose M. Almeida, Jose Fidalgo, Mark Fidalgo, Louis V. Costa, Louis J. Costa and Michael Fidalgo.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
