John Hellew, 63, Warren


John Hellew, 63, of 377 Child St., Warren, died in his sleep on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013. He was the husband of Shirley Hellew, the loving father of Kelsey and Christian, and brother of Virginia and Janis.

Born in Warren, a son of the late John and Helen, he attended school and later Upper Iowa College. He was the first student at Upper Iowa to be chosen to participate in a semester at Drew University, where he studied International Studies at the United Nations. He earned his law degree at the Franklin Pierce Law Center. He started his career in the appellate division of the Rhode Island Attorney General's Office, served as the Warren Town Solicitor for two years and was in private practice for more than 30 years.

Mr. Hellew was cremated, and his ashes will be laid to rest at a later date.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
