Jerry M. Landay, 83, of Bristol, departed this life on Aug. 1, 2013, passing in peace and comforted by his beloved wife, Sandy Chabot, and other family members.

An embracing husband, proud father and seeker of knowledge, laughter and social justice, Jerry will be missed by those whom he inspired and cherished.

Jerry was born in Tarentum, Pa., on Aug. 22, 1929, to the late Saul and Rose Landay. He was the valedictorian of his class at Tarentum High School and magna cum laude graduate of Syracuse University.

Jerry spent most of his career in journalism, first as a reporter at KDKA, Pittsburgh, and served as news director at WBZ, Boston. He went on to work as Westinghouse Broadcasting Co.’s chief foreign correspondent, covered the White House during the Watergate scandal for ABC News, was an editor for the Week in Review of the Sunday New York Times and then joined CBS News as a radio and television correspondent.

He authored books on the history and archeology of the Middle East, and wrote numerous pieces on the media and politics for the Providence Journal, The New York Times, Washington Monthly, the London Telegraph, the Times of London, and many other prominent publications.

Beginning in 1988, Jerry taught journalism at the University of Illinois. He retired as a professor emeritus in 1999, and moved to Bristol two years later. He was actively involved in civic life. He belonged to the Save Bristol Harbor Association and East Bay Citizens for Peace, and advocated the teaching of the arts in Bristol public schools.

Jerry leaves behind his adored wife, Sandy, his sister, Eileen, his sons, Jonathan and Woodrow, his daughter, Stephanie, and his grandchildren, Amelia Kate, David, Noah, Max and Anna.

A memorial gathering will be held at Linden Place, Bristol, on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Rhode Island Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 1210 Pontiac Ave. Cranston, RI 02920 (401) 943-8888.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
