Jane E. Demant, 90, Tiverton

Jane Erskine (Chase) Demant, 90, of Somerset, Mass., died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, at Clifton Rehabilitative Nursing Center, Somerset. She was the wife of the late Aksel E. Demant.

Mrs. Demant was the eldest child of Martha (Jackson) and Nathaniel S. Chase of Fall River.

She graduated from BMC Durfee High School and the F.A. Wilcox Secretarial School in Fall River. She was a long-time employee at the Shell Oil Company until her retirement in 1973 when she and her husband moved to Tiverton. Mrs. Demant also worked for several years at BankNewport-Stone Bridge branch.  Mrs. Demant was an excellent gardener and loved to do needle work. She was a past president of the garden club and a past deacon of the United Congregational Church of Little Compton.

She is survived by her sister, Deborah Hagensen of Portsmouth; 15 nieces and nephews, and many great nieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late Nathaniel S Chase Jr. and John H Chase.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
