Jams S. Barreira, 80, Westport


James S. Barreira, 80, of Westport died Friday, May 24, 2013, at Rhode Island Hospital.  He was the husband of Julia A. (Dinger) Barreira.  Born in Fall River, he was son of the late John S. and Adeline (Camara) Barreira.

He was a veteran of the Korean War.  Prior to retirement he was a boiler maker for Local 29 in Quincy.

Including his wife, survivors include two son,: Rickie A. Barreira of Fall River and Timmy L. Barreira and his companion Jill Harris of Westport; a daughter, Sharon K. Barreira and her companion John Gagnon of Westport; four grandchildren, Jamie, Timothy Jr., Kaila and Justin; a great grandson, Rylan; and nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late William Barreira and Ronald Barreira.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Road, Westport.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
