Invitation to join Socrates Café at the Weaver Library

Posted

The Weaver Library’s Socrates Café invites you to participate in the upcoming season of this friendly discussion group, now in its fifth year. All voices are welcome. Participants exchange ideas in the manner of the Greek philosopher Socrates and meet monthly throughout the year.

Gatherings promote thoughtful, respectful inquiry on questions of universal interest, such as these: What are qualities of a good leader? Can you love someone you do not respect? What is life’s purpose?

Given the success of the program, moderator Betsy Shea-Taylor hosts two separate groups every month on the first and third Thursdays from September through May. Each group begins at 6:25pm and ends at 7:45pm. Registration is required as these are not drop-in groups.

The idea for the Socrates Café evolved out of the 2001 book of the same name by Christopher Phillips, and has been embraced around the globe.

Betsy Shea-Taylor, who is a journalist and literacy tutor, invites prospective members to stop in to the Library’s Conference Room on Wednesday, August 15, 2018 any time from 4 to 6 p.m. to discuss the Socrates Café discussion process.

Weaver Library is located at 41 Grove Avenue, East Providence, RI 02914. For more information or to register, contact Librarian Joyce May at (401) 434-2453 or at eplibraryjoyce@yahoo.com.

Meet our staff
Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
