Hit the ice in Newport!


The Newport Skating Center kicks off the season Friday, Dec. 7, with a tree lighting at 5:30 p.m. Enjoy hot chocolate and cookies, a visit from Santa and carolers. Afterwards, lace up for the official start to the winter skating season. On two Tuesdays, Dec. 11 and 18, you can skate with Santa from 6-7 p.m. Don’t forget to bring your camera to capture a holiday photos of the big man under the stars.

WHERE: Newport Skating Center, 4 Commercial Wharf, Newport

WHEN: 5-9 p.m. Monday to Thursday; 5-9 p.m. Friday (9-11 p.m. for adult skate); 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday; noon to 5 p.m. Sunday; check website for holiday and vacation hours

COST: $7 for adults ($5 for Friday adult skate hours) and $5 for seniors and children ages 3-11 for a three-hour pass; check website for discounts

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
