Hilda Mindyas, 89, of Manchaca, Texas

Mrs. Hilda (Tavares) Mindyas, age 89, of Manchaca, Texas, and formerly of Metacom Avenue, Bristol, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019. She was the wife of the late Francis W. Mindyas.  Born in Bristol, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Antonetta (Benevides) Tavares. 

She was a partner in the J & H Cafeteria in the Furon Corp-Dixon Manufacturing in Bristol for several years, retiring in 1984. She previously was a waitress at the former Lou’s Spa on Metacom Avenue, Bristol, for 18 years. Hilda was a communicant of St. Elizabeth’s Church, Bristol. 

She is survived by two children, Janice Ann Frizzell of Manchaca, Texas, and Andrew John Mindyas of Columbia, Tenn., five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and cousins Albert and Evelyn Benevides. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Manuel and James Tavares, and four sisters, Mary Lamarca, Rose Marshall, Julia Travassoa and Irene Frey.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
