Hayward wins Women's State Amateur golf championship

CRANSTON — Seekonk native Kelsey Hayward added another noteworthy title to her resume recently, winning the Rhode Island Women's State Amateur Golf Championship held at Cranston Country Club with a victory over Jackie Booth in the final.

Hayward, entering her senior year at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut, was the top seed in the match play portion of the event after carding a 2-over par 73 during stroke play qualifying. She bettered the field by seven strokes.

Hayward, a Bay View Academy graduate, opened match play with a 7-and-5 win over eighth-seeded Kathy Mis. She then won her semifinal match by a similarly convincing score of 5-and-4 over Sharon Muncy. Hayward finished off her championship run with her 4-and-3 win over second-seeded Booth in the final.

Hayward actually needed a rally to get the better of Booth, who plays out of Portsmouth's Green Valley. She won the first hole of the 18-hole championship match, but lost four of the next five holes to trail 3-down.

Starting at the seventh, however, Hayward won the next six holes to go 3-up. She closed out the title on the 14th, playing her torrid stretch in 4-under par.
