Have your gardening questions answered on Saturday in Barrington

Barrington Farm School hosting special event

Officials at Barrington Farm School are inviting people to have their soil tested and their gardening questions answered during a special event on Saturday, May 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Rhode Island Master Gardeners will conduct free soil testing to help determine soil pH levels and textures, and will also provide recommendations for gradual correction of soil problems. Volunteers will also provide basic recommendations for soil problems. This service is provided for free at the farm at 0 Federal Road.

Soil sample instructions:

If you would like your soil tested please bring in soil samples (limit of 3 at a time) taken 4- to 5-inch deep from various parts of a bed or lawn. You will want to collect the samples of soil at the plant or lawn root zone (around 6 inches deep). You should be gathering about a half-cup amount from several sites within the same area to be tested. Mix them together, allow the soil to dry overnight on newspaper. Next, place 1 cup of the mix in a paper bag or clean container and label it. Collect separate samples from different areas on your property such as vegetable gardens, lawns and flower gardens.

"Bring all the samples to the Barrington Farm School farmstand, have a little lemonade, ask your gardening questions at the kiosk and meet the farmers," stated a recent press release.
