Gilbert Duarte Borges, 90, of Bristol

Gilbert Duarte Borges, 90, of Silver Creek Manor passed away on January 18th at Silver Creek Manor.  He was the husband of the late Georgia Ann (Vera) Borges. Born in Bristol, he was the son of the late Antone Duarte and Maria (Medeiros) Borges.

He attended Bristol schools and was a wire worker for Kaiser Aluminum for 21 years before retiring. He is survived by his daughter Cheryl Lewis of Newport; grandchildren Jordan Lewis and Ashley Lewis of Warren and his sister Evelyn Pinheiro of Bristol. He was the brother of the late Gilda Madiera, Manuel Borges, Milton Borges, John Borges, Edmund Borges and Reynold Borges.

Graveside services were held Monday January 22nd in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Arrangements were by the George Lima Funeral Home.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
