Get in the saddle Saturday in Warren

Watch out on the roads Saturday: There figure to be a lot of kids out on bikes, and on foot.

Most of them will likely be headed toward the Kickemuit Middle School, where Warren is holding its first-ever "Bikes & Feet on Every Street" day. It's a morning-long bike safety event paid for in part by the same state grant that is also paying for a new bridge over the Kickemuit River at the so-called Broken Bridge.

There will be BMX bike riding demonstrations by World BMX bike trick champion Chris Poulos, running clinics, skateboarding demos, ZUMBA, a dance party and more. Those who attend (it runs from 7:30 a.m. to noon) also have a chance to win raffles of iPods, bikes, skateboards, helmets, running GPS units, fitness packages, gift baskets and more. Finally, there will be tons of freebies given away including bike helmets, locks, lights, pedometers and more.

The grant grew out of efforts by the town planner to rebuild the old broken bridge as a link between the new bike path in eastern Warren with the rest of the town. For more information, look for "Warren Bikes and Feet on Every Street" on Facebook.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
