George E. Pierce, 73, Riverside


George E. Pierce, 73, of Riverside, died peacefully on February 26, 2014. He was the loving companion of Judy Kelley of Rumford. Born in Fall River, a son of the late G. Elton and Eileen (Moore) Pierce, he lived in Riverside for 60 years.

Mr. Pierce was a truck driver for over 40 years before retiring in 2006. George was a communicant of St. Brendan Church. He was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Prayer Group and Teamsters Local No. 251. He enjoyed playing cards, cooking and baking. Mr. Pierce was a United States Navy Veteran serving during the Vietnam era.

Besides his companion, he is survived by a sister, Frances A. Entas of Fairfax, VA, a cousin, John F. Conley of East Providence and several nieces and nephews.

His funeral was held on Friday March 7, from the W. Raymond Watson Funeral Home, 350 Willett Ave., Riverside with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Brendan Church, Turner Avenue, Riverside. Burial with military honors followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bristol.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
