Knights force deciding game against top-seeded Clippers

The Providence Country Day-St. Raphael-Wheeler co-op boys’ hockey team forced a deciding game in its Division II championship final with top-seeded Cumberland after the Knights handed the Clippers their first league loss of the season, 4-3 in a shoot-out in Game 2 of their title series Saturday night, March 16, at Brown University’s Meehan Auditorium.

After the sides skated level through regulation and a five-minute overtime period, Bennett Hicks scored during the fifth round of penalty shots to give PCD the win and force a third-and-deciding game Monday night, March 18, once again at Brown at 6 p.m.

East Providence residents Jeff Pimental and Ben Kaihler played important roles in the victory. Both representing St. Ray’s, Pimental made 55 saves in the co-op net while Kaihler assisted on the team’s three regulation time tallies.

The Clippers, who fell to 21-1-0 with the loss, were 2-1 winners in overtime in Game 1 of the series also at Brown Friday night, March 15. Pimental made 35 stops before being beaten in the extra session for the winning goal. Kaihler’s first period score accounted for the lone PCD goal in regulation.

The Division I championship series won in a two-game sweep by Bishop Hendricken over LaSalle also had a local flavor. The Hawks claimed the state title with 5-3 and 4-3 victories.

Brady Berard, who finished the night with a hat-trick, potted the title-clinching goal in overtime of the Hawks’ 4-3 Game 2 victory. Berard also scored a goal in Hendricken’s Game 1 win and was named the series most valuable player.

Zenas Kennedy, of the noted East Providence hockey clan, had a goal and assist for the Rams in Game 2. City resident Colin Chapman actually put LaSalle on top with an unassisted goal mid-way through the third period before Berard netted the equalizer for the Hawks with an extra skater with just 90 seconds remaining in the game. Berard scored the winning goal 37 seconds into overtime.

Kennedy also had two helpers for LaSalle in its Game 1 defeat. He finished as the Rams’ leading scorer for the season with 5 goals, 23 assists and 28 points. Chapman (20 points) was second on the Rams for the winter with 12 goals.
