Food Truck 5k delivers fun for all ages

Posted

Bristol's Pete Harley crossed the finish line more than a minute ahead of his nearest competitor to win the Food Truck 5k on Saturday. Mr. Harley completed the course, that circles the Warren Reservoir, in 17:58. Emily McCaffrey of Warwick won the women's division with a time of 19:50.

The race was just part of the fun at the afternoon-long event hosted by the Bristol Warren Education Foundation (BWEF). The day started with Warren's Tony DaPonte orchestrating 40-50 kids who were participating in 'fun races' on the Kickemuit Middle School Track. The 5k and a 1-mile walk went off just after that all followed by a food truck festival at the Pete Sepe Pavilion.

"It's hard to tell who's having the most fun," said BWEF board member Darcy DaCosta. "We really wanted to put on a family-style event that had something for everyone."

Judging from the smiles spread around the Warren Recreation Facility Saturday there was, something for everyone. The post-race party featured live music, dancing, yoga, bubbles (for little ones), beer (for the older ones) and of course the food trucks.

Though this was the inaugural Food Truck 5k, BWEF is carrying on the legacy of a 25-year tradition. They have taken over management of the race from the Bristol Warren Substance Abuse Task Force, who had put on the race for the past couple of decades. "It was important to BWEF and others in town to keep this event going," Ms. DaCosta said. "We are happy to take what others have worked hard to build into a community tradition and put our own spin on it."

"We are thrilled by the response and turnout, it's all been really positive" said Ms. DaCosta, "we will definitely be back next year, bigger and better."

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
